Titanium is a light grey metal with a low specific weight, high corrosion resistance and excellent heat resistance. Extraction takes place, for example, from the mineral Ilmenite, from rutile, leucoxene or anatase. Significant deposits are found in Australia, Canada, Brazil, Norway and South Africa.
The first to sense the existence of this metal was Joseph Priestley in 1791, analysing a black, magnetic sand from Cornwall. The name Titanium was coined by the chemist Heinrich Klaproth, who discovered it in 1795 without managing to isolate it. Only in 1887 did Lars Fredrik Nilson and Otto Petersson manage to obtain the metal at a purity of 95% by reducing titanium tetrachloride with sodium in a vacuum furnace. Only in 1910 did M. A. Hunter obtain the 99.9% pure metal by refining the previous method of Nilson and Petersson.
